We've got a Patreon!

Basically, we're trying a few things out. It's separate from NamirDeiter.net. Right now it's running in-progress sketches of the comics (which will be posted when the comics are being worked on). Also, donors will get one sketch request a month!

Rules: Safe for work. Your character or mine. Black and white. We reserve the right to veto. You get your sketch after Patreon payment goes through, so sign up now to get in for July!

Also, Adult Supervision Required got a bit of a redesign!

Because Magikarp Jump came out just a little while ago, let me tell you my Magikarp ribbon story. It's from January. But Magikarp is timeless.

As we mentioned last time, part of the Anime LA experience is ribbons. They look like this.

Some people trade them. Some people have challenges and quizzes. Some people made it more difficult - you had to be dressed as a certain character, or you had to find the ribbon-holder in costume and say a phrase from a show, or something like that.

They're fun to collect. We really enjoyed getting them last year, so we got a few made. Mine were "Magikarp used splash!", which people seemed to like. Every so often, I'd just walk out into the hall and look like I had ribbons to give away and people could either trade or take the quiz.

I'd ask "Do you know the Magikarp song?" And after a moment, someone would say "karp, karp, karp", and I'd tell them that they were wrong. Then I'd turn to a second person - and a crowd had gathered around by that point - and ask if they knew the magikarp song.

The second person would look sad and say 'no'. Then, in my loudest voice, I would tell them "That is CORRECT. You do NOT know the Magikarp song!"

Because it's not "Challenge - sing me the magikarp song". It's "Quiz - Do you know the magikarp song?". And that's the correct answer to the question (unless you know the Magikarp song. But you probably don't since it hadn't been released in English at the time). Then I'd give a ribbon to the first person also, because fun's fun and they were being a good sport about it.

Then, a third person would come up and say "Umm, I also don't know the magikarp song" and I'd give them a ribbon because it's not the kind of trick I can play twice on the same crowd. I'm sure a few people left thinking the ribbon was for not knowing the magikarp song, rather than correctly answering whether or not you knew it.

Anyhow, a few months later the Magikarp song was recorded in English and you can listen to it here.

Two awesome things!

Moueska sent us a Nicole and Derek-themed papercraft, which was amazing.

Also, author Stephen Coghlan wrote about how our works influenced his GENMOS books, which has us stoked. We've got a diverse set of influences for Nicole and Derek, and it's awesome how things can influence and inspire.

From the twitter:
Our comic, Nicole and Derek, began two years ago today! http://nicoleandderek.com . One like = 1 Nicole and Derek fact!
1/ The general structure, in which multiple protagonist teams work at conflicting purposes, was inspired by The Wire.
2/ Brisbane's family was originally named after cities. If we kept this up, Nicole's name would've been Dakota.
But we had named her brothers Dennis and David by this point, so the streak was broken. Fortunately.
3/ Avery is energetic but unfocused. She has the worst luck; it's usually her fault. Her grandfather is Tom from Namir Deiter/Grover Hills.
4/ Tera was originally going to be part of Team Miss Fluffy. She was energetic, focused, and very lucky. She'd be a counterpoint to Avery.
Miss Fluffy does things herself instead of having her friends do the work, so there wasn't much for Tera to do.
5/ There was going to be a classmate who held a grudge because Nicole's parents fired his mom. But the comic ended up less business-focused.
6/ Used to begin each storyline with a character getting ready for school. I stopped because I would've had to introduce everyone's parents. (and we wanted to focus on making sure you knew the main cast before we expanded things like that)
7/ Nicole and Derek first appeared in a http://NamirDeiter.net sketch back in 2006. We had been considering a shared sequel for a while.

And a bonus:
8/ Got Any Money? was meant to be the start of a story cycle, centered around what a specific character wants and how they try to get it. That was Avery's chapter. Each of them would be named after a Los Shakers song. But that idea never got much further, in part because I was the only person I know who's even heard of Los Shakers.
